Checking in on Buffalo’s blog party

You may not know it, but there’s a vibrant blogging community right here in Buffalo and the Western New York region. We blog about everything, including architecture, sprawl, politics, and American Idol. For those of you who have not yet stepped into the year 2000, here’s the meaning of ‘blog’:
Blog = Web Log, as in “online diary.” Online, as in “on the internet.” Internet, as in “that thing that gets people into all kinds of trouble these days.”
Trouble? Well, the same old name-calling is going on in the comments section of many Buffalo Rising (BuffaloRising.com) articles. Today I read a post about the demolition of the Atwater House on Elmwood to make way for a parking lot, and what that means for “New Urbanism” in Buffalo. Thirty heated comments (and counting) later, only one person so far has been called a not-so-nice name. I’m sure there’ll be more by the end of the day. People are mean!
Speaking of Buffalo Rising, I think the new look of the site is pretty cool. I’ve registered as a “guest” but haven’t yet been able to choose an icon to characterize me—they don’t have one representing an overweight, white, suburban housewife.
Here’s a quick roundup on what Buffalo’s bloggers are thinking and blogging about.
• Big props to Kelly Sedinger,
blogger at Byzantium Shores (byzantiumshores.blogspot.com). He recently won first prize in the Buffalo News’s short story contest for his tale “Twelve Presidents.”
• Lots of talk about snow, Wonder Woman Underoos, and penguins at
All Things Jennifer (allthingsjennifer.com).
• Mike is on a weight-loss plan and has stopped eating Mighty Taco. For a while, anyway. Cheer him on at the Royal Toybox (royaltoybox.blogspot.com).
• Jessica is kicking ass on the roller rink as a member of the Queen City Roller Girls. Read more about her bruises at soulofbuffalo.livejournal.com.
• Deeva is an amazing photographer. You can see some of her fabulous photos from around town at The 716 (The716.com).
• Caffeinated Gonzo likes coffee, podcasts, and tech-y kinds of stuff at www.caffeinatedgonzo.wordpress.com.
• Whitney and Steve are buying a house in Buffalo and renovating it themselves. You can read about their highs, lows, and paint color options at This Old Old House (oldoldhouse.blogspot.com)
• Esther loves mocking people who mispronunciate words like ‘library’ and ‘ambiguity.’ Join in the fun at Phoebe and Her Friends (phoeby.blogspot.com).
