FROM THE EDITOR

It isn’t easy being green when you’re in the publication business. Our mission is to serve our Western New York readership by regularly giving you printed products—which may or may not be recycled afterwards. Yet, as long as people enjoy reading magazines—and they still do!—we’ll continue to publish ours. And we’ll continue to reduce the effect that has on our natural resources and environment in as many ways as we can.

The printing industry affects the environment from the moment a tree is cut down to make paper to the moment a consumer is done reading the final output of that process. But just as there are many possible harmful side effects of printing, there are equally as many ways of reducing that harm. Our printers at Dual Printing Inc. have taken a number of initiatives to print green, including:

•purchasing the only “green” web press in North America. Its emissions are ninety-nine percent VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)-free. VOCs are a major source of air pollution, both indoor and out, and contribute significantly to global warming. They also make people sick.

•significantly shortening the pre-press process so that paper, ink, and energy are not wasted.

•installing a solvent recovery system that has reduced solvent use by eighty percent.

•becoming FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified. The FSC is dedicated to responsible forest stewardship, including the elimination of habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples and violence against people and wildlife that often accompanies logging, as well as curbing deforestation.

As a result of these innovations Dual has attracted the attention of publications nationwide who are interested in greening up their printing processes. We are proud that we are working with Dual, and look forward to participating with them in other initiatives to promote safe, sustainable printing. So we can all keep reading.
