If October signifies the initial descent into a tumultuous zone of cold weather, if not a dreaded “surprise,” don’t fret. Because it is certainly a busy month for local events, many of them benefiting local charities and organizations. Among these are two Buffalo Spree-sponsored highlights: the Hospice Buffalo Harvest Festival and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Dine Out for the Cure.
The Hospice Buffalo Harvest Festival on October 3 has become a fall tradition in WNY. This year’s celebration, the eighth annual, pays tribute to the community members who avidly support the services of the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care. And in a special highlight, this year’s Harvest Festival celebrates thirty years of Hospice Buffalo. The gala event, presented by the Buffalo Bills, features a sit-down gourmet dinner accompanied by Spanish wines from Olé Imports, as well as a predinner wine tasting. Guests will enjoy live music, dancing, and silent and live auctions awarding stellar prizes like wine cellar collections and trips. The evening will also include the grand prize drawing of a shiny and brand-spankin’ new Sony flat-screen television and Blu-ray player. And the second prize could not be more timely: $1,500 in free gas.
The Harvest Festival will benefit the many programs and services that Hospice Buffalo offers to more than 550 patients daily. The evening will feature the Hospice Hope, Care, and Dignity Awards Ceremony, honoring those who contribute to Hospice, and a new physician award. Tickets are $175 each, and corporate tables may be purchased for $2,500. The event takes place at the Adams Mark Hotel’s grand ballroom, located at 120 Church Street. For ticket reservations and more information, visit www.hospicebuffalo.com or call the Hospice Foundation at 686-8090.
Meanwhile, in celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness month and the more than thirteen thousand breast cancer survivors in the area, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s WNY affiliate will present the fourth annual Dine Out for the Cure on October 21. The local affiliate has awarded over $2 million to breast cancer education, screening, and treatment in Western New York, and thousands of dollars to the Susan G. Komen National Research Grant Awards. Events such as the annual Race for Cure and this upcoming dining extravaganza are key fundraisers in the Komen global breast cancer movement.
In addition to the wonderful cause, there’s the fab food, as Dine Out for the Cure features over sixty area restaurants. Each restaurant will donate a percentage of the diners’ bill, or proceeds from a special “pink” menu, to the event fundraiser. In addition, every restaurant will feature breast cancer survivors or volunteer advocates dubbed “Dine Out Diplomats” whose purpose is to provide diners with vital breast cancer information, those stylish little pink ribbons, and donation envelopes. Last year, with diplomats’ efforts along with restaurant and customer donations, Dine Out for the Cure raised over $18,000. Help make this year even more special by visiting www.komenwny.org.
