FROM THE EDITOR

Every once in a while we notice that people actually read this magazine. Our readers let us know about mistakes we’ve made, they email us with suggestions of things they wish we’d cover (suggestions that we often implement), or, most often, they think of Spree as a resource, contacting us to find out more about the topics we cover.

This was never more true than two years ago when we published our first “Eligibles” issue. Suddenly, I found myself in the odd position of fielding inquiries from readers who wanted to know more or even meet some of the singles featured in the issue. Through a labyrinthian network of emails between me, the writers, and the profile subjects, we made sure that these expressions of interest were conveyed without any risk to our interviewees. It was a little strange.

But even more strangely, it worked! We have at least one marriage and a definite engagement from the last group of singles we profiled and the resulting follow-up. Kristin Silvestri, profiled in 2007, is now engaged to a young man who contacted us upon seeing her profile. Maureen Littleton got married soon after the profile came out. Tyra Johnson met someone soon after being profiled, and Chastity Taber and Sean O’Shei, who were both profiled, are still dating. There could be other interesting results from that batch of singles; we haven’t kept up with most of them.

To be honest, we never expected to be part of any matchmaking efforts. The Eligibles issue is much more about spotlighting interesting Western New Yorkers—we hope you’ll agree that this issue’s singles are a fun and fascinating bunch.

I also hope you will enjoy Barry Muskat’s article on the current renovation of the long-neglected 100 block of Genesee Street. We are proud to announce that, thanks to our ongoing coverage of Western New York’s built environment, we have received a Friends of Architecture award from the American Institute of Architects Western New York chapter. Look for much more from us in the future on this and other important development projects in the area.

Wishing you a wonderful 2009,
