It has been almost sixteen years since I first attended a CEPA art auction; it was an exciting, glamorous event then, and none of its brilliance has dimmed over the years. Wisely maintaining this as a biennial event, the gallery continues to get top-notch examples of work by such internationally known artists as Cindy Sherman, Ellen Carey, and William Wegman, as well as equally stellar submissions by well-established artists who happen to be locally based, including John Pfahl, Julian Montague, Joseph Piccillo, and Milton Rogovin.
And that is the keythe work never goes downhill. It is always a great selection, and always includes more affordable small pieces for those who just want to walk away with something, even if they can’t spend a lot.
Consistency is the key to success with how the event is run as well. For most years, the auctioneer has been Dale W. Stulz, a brisk, efficient, and entertaining auctioneer who knows fine art photography better than most. Stultz is back this year, along with a lavish spread of hors d’oeuvres, a full bar, and a general atmosphere of classy fun.
CEPA’s 10th Biennial Photography Art Auction is Saturday, April 24, at the Market Arcade, 617 Main Street. The reception starts at 5:30 p.m., with the live event at 7 p.m. The works to be auctioned are on view at CEPA starting April 3. Visit www.cepagallery.org to buy tickets and get more information on the artists and works.
