FROM THE EDITOR
Like a lot of offices where writing and designing go on, Buffalo Spree headquarters strikes a casual tone. We have plenty of funky artwork, desktop toys, and even life-size stuffed animals. And last week we acquired a new plaything: the Apple iPad, wi-fi version. You may have heard of the iPadit’s the latest device that will revolutionize our lives. Maybe.
The reason we have one in the office is that we are exploring the ways that magazines, books, and other content are being transformed to be read/watched on devices like these. We know that someday our readers will be holding an iPad or a Kindle instead of the printed version of Spree; when that happens, we want Spree to be ready.
Magazines across America are making the same plans; indeed, several publications can already be read on the device, with turning pages, full color, and all the other experiences that the print magazine offerswithout the print magazine. And we’re asking ourselves the same question that may of you are askingis this how I want to read books and magazines? Looking ahead, I know that a day will come when such a question will seem irrelevant to many people, who will choose these devices as the only way they experience publications.
But for now, we can ask the question and choose our personal answer. For now, I suspect many of you feel as I doI prefer the physical book or the physical magazine. I like to turn the pages with my fingers, not a keypad. But I accept that this may change dramatically over the years to come; there’s even a certain excitement to it.
We are lucky to be living at a time where major paradigms are shifting, a time where we can still enjoy the old school ways while looking down the road at the coming of the new.
And I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Spree the old-fashioned way.
